Two medals each for France and Ukraine

Rostock (LEN) – Delivering a superior performance, Matthieu Rosset of France took the title in the first individual event at the Arena European Diving Championships in Rostock. Rosset won the 1m springboard with a large margin, scoring a total of 433.800 points, ahead of Russia’s Evgenii Novoselov (396.05) and Ukraine’s Oleg Kolodiy (391.15). After three European bronze medals in the 1m springboard Rosset won his first gold. The 25-year old double European champion in 2012 (3m springboard and Team Event) increased his winning margin by each dive. “I never reckoned with such a big winning margin. Of course I’m overwhelmed and happy about the victory. Today’s success will give me a lot of confidence for the 3m springboard event.”

At his only start in Rostock, Ukraine’s Novoselov earned his first ever medal at the European Championships.

After an exciting competition and thanks to her very last dive, Ukraine’s Iiulia Prokopchup took her third title in the 10m platform event after 2012 and 2013. Catching up on her competitors she collected 327.50 points and even passed Laura Marino (France) who earned the silver medal (323.60). Marino was visibly disappointed not have won the gold medal. Last year’s silver medalist Noemi Batki (Italy) scored 323.30 points to take third place.

„I was very nervous today. But when I saw the performances of my competitors I knew I had to deliver a really good last dive. I’ve still got difficulties to believe in my victory,” an overjoyed Iiulia Prokopchuk said.

On Thursday, the Neptun Schwimmhalle in Rostock will see the outcome in the men’s 3m springboard as well as the women’s 10m platform events. Defending champion Patrick Hausding will have to face tough competition – among others 1m springboard winner Rosset. In the women’s 10m synchro an exciting duel between defending champions Ekaterina Petukhova and Yulia Timoshinina (Russia) and European silver medallists Maria Kurjo and My Phan (German) is expected.
