Rostock (LEN) – Tania Cagnotto of Italy and Germany’s Patrick Hausding, “Diver of the Year 2014” of the European Swimming Federation, LEN, are also the most successful athletes at the Arena European Diving Championships in Rostock. Hausding won his very first medal and his very first title in the synchro 10m (with Sascha Klein) at the 2008 Europeans in Eindhoven.
Taking into account his bronze medal that he claimed in the synchro 3m (with Stephan Feck) in Rostock on Friday, the 26-year old from Berlin now has 25 European Championship medals to his name. Apart from 11 titles and 11 silver medals, his collection comprises three bronze medals.
On Sunday, Hausding has the chance to claim yet another medal in the synchro 10m (with Klein). Russia’s Dmitry Sautin is the only diver to have claimed more titles – his medal tally between 1993 and 2010 comprises exactly one dozen gold medals. Italy’s 30-year old Cagnotto celebrated her first medals at the 2002 Europeans in Berlin (silver in the 10m platform and synchro 3m with Maria Marconi). After her success in the 1m springboard on Friday Cagnotto might even further increase her medal tally in Rostock to celebrate a “silver” jubilee.
Together with Francesca Dallapè, Cagnotto is the strongest title candidate in the synchro 3m on Saturday. On Sunday, she will compete in the 3m springboard event. Apart from her 15 gold medals, her collection comprises four silver and bronze medals each.
By the way – Hausding and Cagnotto claimed their medals in the five different diving disciplines that are on the program at European Championships (with the exception of the Team Event). This is a unique feat in the history of European Diving Championships. Additionally, the German athlete is the only diver to have claimed a medal in all the five different men’s events. He claimed two and three silver medals at the 2010 Europeans in Budapest.
While the European Championship program only comprised the 3m springboard and 10m platform events from 1926 in Budapest (only men) and 1927 in Bologna (women as well) until 1987 in Strasbourg, the 1m springboard event made its debut in Bonn in 1989. Since 1997 the synchro events are on the program at European Championships. The Team Event was officially introduced in Eindhoven in 2012.
